PRESENTATION CONFERENCE GHEDINI
Between October 2018 and January 2019, an exhibition will be held at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome to commemorate the poet Ovid on the two thousandth anniversary of his death in Tomi in 18 AD.

The exhibition, promoted by the Scuderie del Quirinale, the Miusei Directorate of MiBACT and the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Padua, is curated by Francesca Ghedini.

The project aims to present the man and the poet to the general public: the man, who came into conflict with Emperor Augustus for political and moral reasons, and the poet, author of some of the most beautiful pages of love poetry and the greatest fresco of classical mythology that antiquity has handed down to us.

The themes developed in the first part of the exhibition will be love, in the dual aspect of beauty and eroticism, and the society of Augustus’ time, centred on cult and ritual. But the heart of the exhibition will be the myths that Ovid narrated and that influenced the figurative culture of Western Europe: myths of love; myths of revenge; myths of punished arrogance.

The works on display exceed 200 pieces and range from antiquity (sculptures, reliefs, frescos, gems, coins…), to the Middle Ages (some of the most important illuminated manuscripts with illustrations of the various myths will be on display), to the great pictorial season of the Renaissance and Baroque, with paintings by the greatest painters of the time.
